AB After a brief discussion of the nature of the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) disease process
and its consequences, the article considers implications for the ear and
hearing. One of the newest etiologic considerations for audiologists is
pediatric autoimmune deficiency syndrome (PAIDS). Babies born to
HIV-AIDS-positive mothers, and children who have acquired the disease,
represent a new challenge to clinics. Symptoms, audiologic care, and
management are considered.
